Lesson Plan: Día de los Muertos


Objective

Students will be able to compare and contrast Day of the Dead and Tomb Sweeping Day.

1. Warmer: 13 objects

a. Students will have 45 seconds to remember what pictures are on the board. The pictures will be items related to Tomb Sweeping Day and Day of the Dead.

b. Students are allowed to draw the pictures if they do not know the word in English.

i. Pass out worksheet!

c. Students share answers as a class. Write the words on the board.

2. Transition: Discuss Tomb Sweeping Day

a. Circle which objects are related to Tomb Sweeping Day

3. Transition: Day of the Dead

a. Watch Nat Geo video of Day of the Dead

i. Fill out worksheet together throughout the video.

ii. Casually ask what are similarities and differences between the two holidays.

4. Venn Diagram

a. Student participation!

b. If students need more ideas:

i. show picture of an ofrenda

ii. use the website on PPT slide

5. Extra time: Build your own virtual altar
